What Stonemasons Do

In stonemasonry, the mason shapes an irregular piece of rock into an accurate structure. When stonemasons work on structure, they usually use levels, gauge lines, and a plumb bob in order to set its vertical and horizontal alignments. Using rules, staked lines, and a straight edge a stonemason is able to layout wall patterns and foundations. Stonemasons also use a chisel, hammers, and power grinder to smooth out rough or defective spots, and use a blowtorch to repair cracked or chipped stone.

Usually when building a monument, the monument parts are carried by truck to the site and the stonemason has to see it removed from the truck bed, then he guides it to the foundation using cranes, hoists, and even skids. Then, the stonemason will make parts of the structure with a mixture composed of stone.

There are many types of stonemasons.

The stonemason that works in a quarry splitting rock sheets down their vein so that chunks of stone can be extracted in a quarryman.

The work of a sawyer mason is to take these chunks of rock and shape them using diamond-tipped saws to the required size and shape.

Further honing of the stone is done by a banker mason such that the size and shape is according to that required by the design of the building. Banker masons ensure that the orientation of the shaped stone in the building is the same as it was oriented in the ground.

The carver mason has the artistic ability to create designs and patterns from or in stones like figures, animals, and other types of design.

The specialization of fixer masons is in fixing stone permanently onto building structure using different forms of epoxy resins and cement. Because of the required precise tolerances and working at high altitude this position is a highly dangerous and skilled one. A fixer mason will use a tackle lift system in order to manipulate stone pieces that are very heavy.

Gravestones, statues, and memorials are carved by a memorial mason.

It is usually outdoors that a stonemason works. In this type of work, you will need to exercise great caution and wear hard hats because it is relatively hazardous. There is great physical demand for this work and during bad weather, there are fewer contracts because of the outside work they do. Because of the advancement in masonry technology, stonemasons can already work outdoors no matter what the weather condition is.

Working as a stonemason is doing hard labor since you are required to climb scaffolding, use hammers and chisels, and spend the whole day kneeling, bending, and lifting heavy material through rough terrain. They have a time schedule to follow when they are contracted privately. In order to keep their deadlines, stonemasons sometimes have to work overtime or during weekends.
